The Bite: Yes, drinking alcohol is legal in Dubai. You need to be 21+, drink in licensed venues, and absolutely never drive after. Here’s how it all works.

So, can you actually drink in Dubai?

You can. Dubai has hundreds of bars, rooftop lounges, and beach clubs. The city’s reputation for strict laws puts people off, but alcohol has been part of the hospitality scene here for decades.

There are rules, though. They’re easy to follow once you know them.

What’s the legal drinking age?

It’s 21. That goes for tourists, residents, and citizens. Venues do check, especially if you look young, so keep your passport or Emirates ID on you when you go out.

Where can you drink?

Only in licensed venues. You can’t just crack open a beer anywhere. In practice, that means:

  • Hotel bars and restaurants (most hotels have at least one, and many have rooftop spots)
  • Licensed clubs and lounges
  • Beach clubs with a license (not all of them have one, so check before you order)
  • Licensed standalone restaurants
  • Your home or hotel room

If you’re not sure whether a place is licensed, hotel bars are always a safe default. Most of the best nightlife in Dubai revolves around hotel venues anyway.

Can you drink in public?

No. Not on the beach, not in a park, not walking down the street. Being visibly drunk in public can also get you fined. The penalties are steep: up to AED 100,000 and up to 6 months in prison for drinking in unauthorized areas.

That sounds intense, but honestly, you’d have to go out of your way to get in trouble. Just drink inside licensed places and you’re fine.

Buying alcohol to drink at home

Two retailers sell alcohol in Dubai: MMI and African + Eastern. Both have shops around the city and deliver to your door.

If you’re a resident, you’ll need to register for a free alcohol license using your Emirates ID. It takes a few minutes in-store. Tourists just need to show their passport at the counter.

Fair warning: there’s a 30% alcohol tax in Dubai. A bottle of wine from a shop costs roughly AED 80 to 200. A pint at a bar runs AED 40 to 60. Budget accordingly.

Bringing alcohol into Dubai

The duty-free allowance is 4 liters per person, which is about four bottles of spirits or five bottles of wine. You can swap that for 2 cartons of beer (24 cans each, 355ml max per can) instead.

Easiest move: grab your bottles at Dubai Duty Free in the arrivals hall right when you land.

A couple of things people miss:

  • You need to be 18 to bring alcohol into the country, even though the drinking age is 21. Weird, but that’s the rule.
  • The 4-liter cap is total. You can’t bring 4 liters of wine and 4 liters of spirits.
  • Anything over the limit needs to be declared at customs.

Drunk driving

Dubai has zero tolerance for this. Not a low limit. Literally zero. Any alcohol in your bloodstream while driving is a criminal offense under UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024.

First-time penalties alone include fines from AED 20,000 to AED 100,000, up to a year in prison, a minimum 3-month license suspension, 23 black points (which triggers an automatic suspension), and your car gets impounded. Repeat offenders face up to 5 years and AED 200,000.

Just take an Uber, Careem, or taxi. It’s genuinely not worth the risk.

Drinking during Ramadan

You can still drink, but most bars pull back during daylight hours. Some venues serve behind screens or curtains out of respect for people who are fasting. After sunset (Iftar), licensed hotel venues open up normally.

The bigger thing to remember during Ramadan: don’t eat, drink, or smoke in public during fasting hours. That goes for everyone, not just Muslims.

Penalties at a glance

OffenseWhat you’re looking at
Drinking in publicUp to AED 100,000 fine, up to 6 months prison
Public intoxicationFine, arrest, possible deportation
Drunk driving (first offense)AED 20,000-100,000 fine, up to 1 year prison
Drunk driving (repeat)Up to AED 200,000, up to 5 years prison
Underage drinkingFine for you, penalty for the venue

A few practical tips

  • Carry your ID. Passport if you’re visiting, Emirates ID if you live here.
  • When in doubt, drink at a hotel bar. They’re always licensed.
  • Even walking between a bar and your taxi, keep it together. Public intoxication counts.
  • During Ramadan, wait until after sunset and stick to licensed hotel spots.
  • Budget for it. Drinks here cost more than you’d expect. A night out adds up.

Frequently asked questions

Is alcohol legal in Dubai for tourists?

Yes. If you’re 21 or older, you can drink at any licensed venue. You don’t need a special license, just your passport.

Can you drink alcohol on the beach in Dubai?

Not on public beaches. Licensed beach clubs have designated areas where alcohol is served, but you can’t bring your own.

How much does a drink cost in Dubai?

A pint of beer runs AED 40 to 60 at most bars. Cocktails are AED 50 to 80. Happy hours and ladies’ nights bring those down a lot.

Can you buy alcohol at Dubai Airport?

Yes. Dubai Duty Free in the arrivals hall sells alcohol up to the 4-liter limit per person.

Is there a dry day in Dubai?

No fixed weekly dry day. Some venues limit service or close during Ramadan and certain religious holidays.

Planning a date night? Most of the bars and restaurants worth going to are in hotels, so you’re covered. Just make sure you’re both 21+.
